How Long Will I Live? Remaining Life Expectancy by Age
A life table estimates average years remaining for people who have already reached your age. It gives a population starting point for “how long will I live?”, while individual lifespans can differ widely.

These examples come from the same bundled data as our online calculator. The values are remaining years at exact birthdays, rounded to one decimal place. They are public examples, rather than a result calculated for you.
| Exact age | Australia: male | Australia: female | US: male | US: female |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 51.9 | 55.7 | 47.5 | 52.1 |
| 40 | 42.4 | 45.9 | 38.6 | 42.6 |
| 50 | 33.1 | 36.4 | 29.9 | 33.5 |
| 60 | 24.2 | 27.2 | 21.8 | 24.7 |
| 70 | 16.2 | 18.4 | 14.7 | 16.8 |
| 80 | 9.2 | 10.6 | 8.5 | 9.8 |

Why subtracting your age from a birth average gives a different answer
In the US male table, life expectancy at birth is 75.79 years. Subtracting 40 would give 35.79 years. But the table’s remaining expectancy at age 40 is 38.59 years.
The age-40 figure is conditional on having reached 40. People who died at earlier ages are part of the birth average, but not the group who have survived to 40. Our calculator therefore looks up remaining life expectancy at your current age.
For this example, adding the remaining years to age 40 gives a statistical total age of 78.59. This is an average under the table’s rates, rather than a promised lifespan. Read the SSA definition
What happens between birthdays?
The calculator estimates your age as a whole number of years plus the fraction between your last birthday and your next. It then interpolates between the adjacent life-table rows.
For example, the Australian male table has 42.35305 remaining years at exactly 40 and 41.40773 at exactly 41. Halfway between those birthdays, the interpolated figure is about 41.88 years. The calculator adds that duration to today’s date to form a countdown target.
The calculation uses full values internally. Rounding a number for display does not make the individual forecast more certain.
Why older people still have remaining life expectancy
At 80, the US table gives about 8.5 remaining years for males and 9.8 for females. An age above the birth average does not make the remaining-years value negative. The relevant group is people who have reached 80.
Likewise, outliving an earlier death clock estimate means you lived beyond that statistical target. In the Mac app you can choose a new target or save a fresh population estimate. The original date was never a personal deadline.
What the simple death clock leaves out
- Individual health: diagnoses, treatment, family history and other personal circumstances are not inputs to the website estimate.
- Lifestyle differences: the website does not adjust the result for smoking, exercise or diet.
- Future changes: a period life table holds the source period’s mortality rates constant, rather than forecasting future medical advances.
- Healthy years: this is a lifespan estimate. It does not separately estimate how many years will be lived in good health.
The Mac app’s separate Longevity guide explores a scenario with additional answers and disclosed assumptions. See the research and model limits.

Common questions
How long will I live if I am 40?
At exactly 40, the bundled tables give about 42.4 remaining years for Australian males, 45.9 for Australian females, 38.6 for US males and 42.6 for US females. These are population averages under the source period’s mortality rates, not individual predictions.
How many years do I have left if I am already 80?
The US 2023 table gives about 8.5 remaining years for males and 9.8 for females at exactly 80. Remaining life expectancy is conditional on reaching the current age, so it can stay positive beyond life expectancy at birth.
What does average of both tables mean?
The website takes the male and female remaining-years values for the selected age and gives each equal weight. It is an equal-weight average for this calculator, rather than a separately published combined-sex life table.
Why does the death clock show an exact date?
A calendar date provides a target for the countdown. The underlying population estimate does not establish an individual’s final day.
